Very good; i like observations made. would be nice to formulate conclusions and include error analysis. rs

Experiment 1: Testing cable attenuation with Power Meter and Power Sensor

Objective

Use a power meter to measure a reference single produced by a single generator
Characteristics of equipments

The power meter HP 435

The power sensor

Procedure

Following the procedures depicted in Radio Laboratory Handbook, page 39-41, six different cables were measured. Attenuation per meter calculated. The results are given in the following table. Note that cable F has an impedance of 75 ohm, which is not compatible with the devices we used.

2,4GHz @ 1mW

Cable#Attenuation [dB ]Output [mW]Length [m]Attenuation per meter [dB/meter ]
A0.450.911.040.43
B9.50.121.039.22
C17.40.018634.850.50
D23.80.0004419.161.24
E3.50.453.31.06
F3.80.423.90.97

Observations:

The cable B has the highest attenuation per meter. Cable A is of relatively the same length as Cable B and has the lowest attenuation per meter. Cable C presented the most favourable results by giving 0.50dB/meter even though it was 34.85 meters long. Cables E and F produced relatively close levels of attenuation per meter.Cable D registered an attenuation of 1.24dB per meter.

Experiment 2: Power Measurement with Spectrum Analyser

Objective

The purpose of this experiment is to measure the loss of a cable in a continuous range of frequencies by using the previous spectrum analyzer.

Equipment used

The spectrum analyzer R3261/3361 Series Advantest Corporation with its own tracking generator.
Reference cable is with 2N connectors of 1.02 m of length.

Procedure

Following the procedures depicted in Radio Laboratory Handbook, page 43-45, six different cables were measured. The results are given in the following table.

Cable#Attenuation [dB ]Length [m]Attenuation per meter [dB/meter ]
A0.471.040.45
B8.201.037.96
C17.4534.850.5
D24.419.161.27
E3.653.31.10
F3.923.91.01

Observations:

The cable B has the highest attenuation per meter. Cable A is of relatively the same length as Cable B and has the lowest attenuation per meter. Cable C presented the most favourable results by giving 0.50dB/meter even though it was 34.85 meters long. Cables E and F produced relatively close levels of attenuation per meter.Cable D registered an attenuation of 1.27dB per meter.

Experiment 3: Measurement of Cable Loss with Spectrum Analyser and Tracking Generator

Objective

The purpose of this experiment is to use the spectrum analyzer together with a signal generator to measure the loss of a cable in a continuous range of frequencies.

Equipment used

A spectrum analyzer
A tracking generator
An interconnection cable
The cables under measurement.

Procedure

Following the procedures depicted in Radio Laboratory Handbook, page 46-50, six different cables were measured. The results are given in the following table.

Cable#Attenuation [dB ]Length [m]Attenuation per meter [dB/meter ]
A0.211.040.20
B8.91.038.64
C17.334.850.49
D24.019.161.25
E3.93.31.18
F4.13.91.05

Observations:

The cable B has the highest attenuation per meter. Cable A is of relatively the same length as Cable B and has the lowest attenuation per meter. Cable C presented the most favourable results by giving 0.49dB/meter even though it was 34.85 meters long. Cables E and F produced relatively close levels of attenuation per meter.Cable D registered an attenuation of 1.25dB per meter.

CONCLUSION
Considering the observations above, we can say that the cable C presented favourable result.
