[edit] Day 1: Monday 05th 2007

This first day of the 10th annual school on Wireless Networking for Development started with registration.

Copying our passport, which was needed to apply for a permit of stay, in accordance with the new Italian regulations.

The opening ceremony included lectures on the activities of the ICTP and the experience in wireless ICT for development (Title:Nine years of School on Wireless Networking). This presentation was by Professor Sandro M. Radicella (The director for the ICTP-ARPL). He made clear that the ICTP is a focal point of cooperation aiming to help scientist from developing countries to overcome thier isolation and contribute to thier research in both applied and theorectical physics as well as mathematics.

Professor Ryszard Struzak lecture on Radio for Development. He empahasised the importance of ICT in economic growth. Clearly from statistics the more the population involved in ICT the better the chances of economic growth. The developing countries categorically are far behind in this and the faster this gap is bridged the better their chance at competitive advantage.

Visa office personnel came in just before lunch to advice us on the new regulations and provided us with the application forms required to obtain the permit of stay, and assistance in filling them out.

We then went for the much anticipated lunch.

After lunch we had an interactive section, where we go to know the participants of the course. Carlos was good enough to inform the participants of the regulations and saftey precautions relating to the use of the Lab. To help the participants remember this eventfuly and informative workshop he suggested we keep this diary.

"Hacking is doing the best you can with whatever you've got" - Rob. To help the participants record and recall the activities of the workshop Rob took the participants through a demonstration of how to use the WIKI and how best to get help.

We also got 2 books per participant on "How to accerelate your internet" and "wireless networking in the developing world". Along came 10 reference books and a toolkit to use during the training and group work.

After the break Dr. J. Janiszewski from Wrolaw University of Technolgy(Poland), presented his lecture on "Designing the Wireless Buisness". He emphasized that as engineers we need to know the value of money, how to generate it and that out language must be understood by economics from whom the money comes.

Phew the day has come to an end ... Off for dinner we run!!!

Still tired from the trip we were happy that the day ended, we nearly didn't write this summary....
