Diary of Monday, 21st February 2005

Prepared by: Azza Medhat Elaskary

Today is Monday, 21st Feb. 2005. I started my day early today to find out that snow storm started showering Trieste with very small pieces of snow to turn the lovely green tree in front of lectures room's window into a white one. In fact I love this weather since it never snows in my country.

The Day starts with a lecture for Prof. E.Pietrosemoli on "Powering Issues" Grounding and Bonding, Power faults and Power over Ethernet.
The lecture explained different ways of "Grounding" and "Bonding" wireless systems Reasons for Grounding, Electrostatic Discharge and Electrical Power Faults. It also showed how to use the data cable for providing power, how to build the Power over Ethernet (PoE) devices and PoE Issues. Dr. Pietrosemoli speaks about the PoE standards and its terminologies. At the end of his lecture he gave us a useful site to help in building our own PoE device.

At 10:15am we have a coffee break it lasts for 20 minutes.
After break at10:35 we joined again to listen to Mr. S.Okay (Inveneo, USA) he gave us a lecture on "Low power systems for wireless ICT applications". But the time was not enough to cover all the items prepared for this lecture so it is postponed to the after lunch session.

At 11:35 There was another lecture started titled "Internet 2 way broadband satellite" Mr. S.Zara (Skylogic, Italy) was the lecturer. The lecture discussed the Satellite communications systems. It declared the advantage of using such systems. It also showed the coverage areas for different satellite.
At 12:30 we went for lunch. After lunch we stay in break until 2:00
At 2:00 Mr.S.Okay resumed his lecture again. The lecture concluded many ideas for different ways to establish our own low power wireless system. Designing embedded system, Common network chipsets and their Linux Drivers, Storage for low power systems, Choosing a platform (purpose, power, price and place), and also the environmental issues which affects the wireless system (weather, damage, temperature vs. power, pests and theft).

Then at 4:00 we went for a short break, and then the lecture continued after that.
At 5:00 the lab session started immediately as a demo for what we have finished in the lecture. Mr. Rob guided us for a practical and step by step demo to flash the firmware for the Linksys access point (AP) WRT-54G for providing more user capabilities.

We were lucky, the lab finished successfully before dinner time so we can enjoy having nice Italian pasta. Otherwise we have to restart after dinner again.
