Diary of Tuesday, 15th February 2005

Prepared by: Dhirendra Sharma

From 9 AM to 11.20 AM (with a coffee break from 10 AM — 10.20 AM).
Day started with a very interesting lecture on "Introduction to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)" given by Dr. R. Stuzak. He discussed issues related to EMC, EMI related threats alongwith real life examples as given in the slides. One participant from Nepal "Wagle Shree Bhadra" also discussed his real life experience that being an employ of Radio Nepal he was posted at one of the transmission station. He was married at time and obviously looking for family expansion. But after getting posted at transmission station he found that all the employs were blessed with baby girl and none of them with baby boy. He also made an attempt and blessed with baby girl too. He was happy but still looking for baby boy. After few years he wanted to have second child but he was aware of his limitations being posted at transmission station. He sent a request to his head office that he wants a posting away from transmission station to head office. His request was accepted and within a few days, he got transferred and made an another attempt in order to complete his family. This time he and his wife were blessed with baby boy. Thank God for the baby boy. Accordingly to him this is the real life fact. All the participants had nice time and a great fun in the lecture hall. But is this a truth or an illusion? Still some experiments have to be done carefully?

11.20 AM -11.50AM:
Small lecture on "Wireless networks" was delivered by Carlo Fonda. He presented a general overview of practical Wireless LAN issues related to point to point and point to multipoint connectivity. Also stressed on low cost links by building self made antennas. Which we started making antennas in the afternoon during lab session.

11.50 AM-12.20 PM:
Complete work plan for the afternoon i.e. during lab session was discussed by Sabestian.Bü:ttrich. and session ends with clapping.

2 PM to 4.00 PM: WirelessLAN development by Access point (AP) and USB Client configuration. i.e. Point to point and multipoint cases were established among groups. This session was taken by S.Büttrich and R.Flickenger.

4.20 PM to 7.30 PM:
Session on "Antenna Measurements" by E.Pietrosemoli, C.Fonda and M.Zennaro. This session was also very interesting. When we started making antennas with our own hand, a lot of excitement and a kind of thrill was there in our group. We started with a Quarter Wave Omnidirectional Antenna for 2.4 GHZ (also called spider antenna). Group no 1 was the first one to make and got the correct accurate frequency resonance measured with the spectrum analyzer. Then another session went from 9PM onwards until 12 mid night for those who were interested in getting more hands on experience individually. Before ending today's diary, I would like to say that Carlo Fonda was still looking very active in the mid night and helping others in the lab.

Chao.
