SG 8- some key areas of study -
IMT-2000
- 3G personal mobile communication system
- wireless access to wide range of services
- voice, internet, broadcasting, email
- terminal (handheld) mobility everywhere
- agreed system based on ITU standards
- specification of Radio Transmission Technology
- frequency bands (WRC-2000)
Notes:
- Principal area in ITU-R: IMT-2000 is ITU’s vision of global wireless access for 21st century; objective is to bring wireless access to a wide range of services and applications – listed in slide.
- For over 15 years, SG 8 has been developing system based on a convenient handheld terminal for use in all types of environment. Emphasis on the system being global which lowers end-user costs and enables the same handset to be used anywhere in the world.
- Last year, the RA approved the RTT for the system which consists of a set of radio interfaces encompassing different modulation schemes appropriate for different environments. Also, WRC-2000 agreed additional spectrum to accommodate the new 3G system and to ensure that the spectrum is harmonised on a global basis to achieve global roaming.
