Summary of Virtual Labs
The use of VLs can:
  • Globalize Science & Technology
    - increase size and scale of efforts,
    - to share both instruments and thought.

  • Combine results from different fields and facilities
    - Scientists could share their data in return for access to collectively generated data sets, which are likely to represent a true "gold-mine" for data mining over the coming decades.
    - Enhance ability to attract R&D contracts from private sector, which can provide prototype computer applications and also perform research on the generated VL data sets for specific purposes such as, for example, the development of new pharmaceuticals.

  • Increase multi-regional participation,

  • Avoid scientific isolation,

  • Reduce 'brain drain' from the South!
