Moday's Diary After a vey nice and wonderful week-end marked by the visit of the Giant cave situated in the Trieste Karst, the school entered in the third and final week this morning. We started at 09:00 A.M with the talentated pedagogue Pr. E. Pietrosemoli from U.L.A Merida, Venezuela. He gave us two lectures on WLAN Architecture and R.F Propagation. These lectures were a follow-up of a series of lectures he started last week. The aim was to equip the participants with the knowledge and material needed to implement both long distance Spread Spectrum link outdoor and middle distance Spread Spectrum link outdoor. In his lecture on WLAN Architecture, Pr. E. Pietrosemoli elaborated on the IEEE 802.11 terminology, the IEEE 802.11 MAC Frames, the basics processes in IEEE 802.11 networks and the configuration parameters. In his lecture on R.F progation, he also elaborated on Antenna systems. Particular emphasizes were put on the following points: -Antenna polarization -Directional antenna types -Polar diagram -Antenna specifications -Coverable distance -Free space versus non free space -First Fresnel zone -Basic loss formula -Propagation loss in non free space -Loss formulas -RF budget -Simple path annalysis concept -RSL and FADE MARGIN -Antenna height -Reflections -Environmental conditions In the afternoon, after a lecture by Pr. E. Pietrosemoli on site selection procedures, we embarqed to the Laboratory for some exercises on the SS long-distance link exercice with Dr. C. Fonda. The participants were divided into two groups and, under the careful guidance of Dr. C. Fonda, endeavoured to establish two wireless networks. Each group was given a wireless PCI that was plugged into a computer. Since the modules available were those of ISA cards, we downloaded the software package needed from the Web.The PCI cards were then configured and each group could be seen from the access point. Unfortunately, despite our determination, we could not configure the routing services using the wireless card. There seemed to be an incompatibility between the software we were using and the version of the Kernel we had on our machines. We however, left the Laboratory at 18.55 P.M with a clear picture of the different steps involved and the know how required to establish such a network.
