School Diary: Friday 22nd February

Subject: DIARY OF FRIDAY, 22ND FEBRUARY, 2002.

The day started a little late at about 10.15 am, this was due to the
Muslim Festivity. Dr. Mike Fitton started his lecture on spread spectrum
techniques at about 10.30 am. Dr. Fitton expanded our knowledge on the
spread spectrum technology and the various techniques involved and we left
for lunch at 12.00 noon.
At 2.00 pm Dr. Fitton continued his lecture on decision feedback
equalisers and he finally concluded his lectures at 3.00 p.m
Immediately after Dr. fitton left, there was an open discussion between
the organisers of the school and the participants. The discussion was
Chaired by Prof. Radicella, with Prof. Struzak and Dr. Fonda in
attendance, at this discussion Mr. 'Femi Sokunbi from OAU Ile-Ife thanked
the organisers of the school for the wonderful work done in organising the
school and the opportunity given to the participants to be at this year's
school. he then suggested if it would be possible to leave the laboratory
open for a few more hours after laboratory sessions so that the
participants can try out their hands on what was not clear to them during
the laboratory sessions and for further practice.
Dr. Fonda said it would not be possible for now due to logistics problem
and this was corroborated by Prof. Radicella.
Prof sruzak suggested if it would be possible to allocate about an hour
for this purpose during the laboratory period and Prof. Radicella said the
issue would be looked into in future schools.
A gentleman from Sudan asked if ICTP could help them in setting up
a network in their university and Prof. Radicella said that the Centre may
be able to assist in the area of technical staff training and help to establish
demonstration projects but it should be requested formally and the possibility
for such help analysed by the ICTP.
Prof. Radicella then asked every participant needing such assistance to ask
their Vice-chancellor to write a comprehensive request to him, soonest.
Dr. Carlo Fonda made some announcements regarding those interested in
visiting the italian cave on sunday morning, he also spoke on the visit to
the Museum next week thursday afternoon after lunch. he also intimated
on the presentation of certificates and school CDs.
After this there was a very short break after which Prof. Pietrosemoli
from Venezuela took us two lectures on the Technical Overview of 802.11
and the MAC funtionality of 802.11.
The lectures ended at about 6.30 pm and everyone dispersed for a beautiful
weekend.
