SCHOOL DIARY: MONDAY, 18 FEBRUARY

Prepared by Gbenga-Ilori, Abiodun O. (Mrs)

The first lecture today was scheduled for 9.00a.m. but
we actually started at 9.15a.m. because the most of
the participants did not come on time. Actually, last
weekend was most people's first weekend in Trieste so
it was a time for going around the beautiful town of
Trieste. Well, I am not too sure but this could be one
of the reasons why only a few participants turned up
at 9.00a.m.
Engr. G. Repici started the day's lecture with his
first presentation on "Model of Telecommunications
Service Production: Theoretical Approach".
Basically, he introduced to us a simplified scheme of
telecommunication production process by which two
fundamental input resources, X1 (lines) and X2
(personnel) are jointly used to produce a given
quantity (Q) of commodity. The model helps the Service
Provider verify the result of past strategies adopted
and also help him in exploring alternative strategies
to support his own personal judgement.
The activity given above is described by a set of
three equations which account for quantity to produce
(production function), for the definition of
objectives (path function) and for cost involved
(budget available).
After taking us through the above for about 1 hour and
10 minutes, we had a break at 10.20a.m.
We resumed lectures with Engr. G. Recipi again after
10 minutes and this time he discussed an application
of the model discussed earlier i.e. a case study.
The summary of this session is a verification, using a
practical approach, of the feasibility of the model
proposed in the theoretical approach, by which, with a
reference to two input variables (X1 ; X2 ), a set of
three equations is necessary and sufficient to
describe the production process of a firm.
After an hour of discussion on this, we took a lunch
break at exactly 11.35a.m.
The lunch break ended at 2.15 p.m. and another session
with Prof. E. Pietrosemoli started. His presentation
was on "Introduction to Communications". He gave us
a detailed lecture on the Basics of Transmission. He
also discussed about the different types transmission
media available and also the strengths and weaknesses
of each.
At this junction, we had anther 10 minutes break
resuming work at 4.10p.m.
Prof. E. Pietrosemoli continued his presentation by
discussing the radio frequency spectrum briefly
because he deemed it fit not to spend too much time on
it since we had already gone over it in one of our
past lectures.
He finally explained to us the results of the
environment on radio wave propagation.
The session was ended at 5.03p.m. and after 15 minute
break we all moved to the Laboratory for a 40 minutes
work on Network Administration with Mr Carlo Fonda
using Linux.
The day's work was ended at 6.03p.m. Many of the
participants however waited till 6.30p.m. for dinner
after our busy day, but I think we all deserve it.
