Date: Fri, 15 Feb 2002 Prepared by: C.K. Aanandan and Sona O. Kundukulam <aanandan@ictp.trieste.it> On this Friday, the participants were eagerly waiting for a weekend after a weeks' hectic shedule. The weather outside was very cold and windy and the participants were in the "party" mood of the prevous evening. But the mood changed as soon as Carlo Fonda started his lecture cum demonstration on linux os. He was actually running around in the lab in his usual style and we could practice "real time" what he was explaining; the different commands in linux for file creation, file editing, copying etc..etc..For people who were addicted to "windows" it was a time to recollect the DOS commands. He discussed the vi editor in detail. We studied how to create the configuration file for the web server. An html file called index.html has been created and we saw how nicely it will appear in the browser window. Thus we concluded the pre-lunch session. The afternoon saw Mr Carlo in full swing explaining different aspects of networking. He told us how to setup a local area network in the laboratory. Mr Contreras was there to help us in the lab session. The participants were divided into four groups with each group having four pcs connected via a hub. We studied how to set IP address, netmask etc for the host systems. The ping command was used to communicate between the PCs within a group. Then one PC in each group was identified as the router and the settings for it was done in the file rc.inet1 using the vi editor. All the routers were connected to a switch. After configuring the routers, we were able to communicate between groups. Then one router was connected to the internet so that from each PC it was possible to access internet. A very fruitfully spend session ended at 6:30 pm and the participants during dinner time were planning their hectic schedule for the weekend.
