• Arose from the need for governments and the private sector to work together to coordinate the operation of telecoms networks and services and to advance the development of communications technology

• ITU’s work is ever-present in what is one of today’s most important systems – that of global communications
  • telephones (fixed and mobile)
  • email and fax
  • radio and TV
  • navigation (including distress and safety aspects)
  • scientific research

• Classed as an Intergovernmental organisation (but one in which private sector plays an increasing role) and is a specialised agency of the UN
