Laboratory Diary: thursday 22nd february -------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2001 03:06:53 +0100 (CET) Prepared by: Samuel Adesoji Aderinto <aderinto@ictp.trieste.it> LABORATORY DIARY FOR 22/2/01 1. INSTALLATION OF WIRELESS NETWORKS Exercises on networking and subnetting continued this morning with C.Fonda practically demonstrating the configuration of WAVELAN card in one of the subnet routers in order to establis a link with the main router. This activity was aimed at creating another subnet from one of the four subnets established yesterday. This exercise was on till about the break time and it was quite motivating and challenging. 2. DIGITAL DIVIDE AND WWW4MAIL The afternoon session resumed with a lecture taken by E.Canessa. He explained digital divide to mean those who have and those who have not the access to the net.He cited the case of an industrialised country like America, that the better educated Americans are more likely to be connected to the net, while wealthier schools are more likely to be connected than the poor schools, the solution to remove this divide is to incorporate issues such as creativity, training, security and open source in order to move the world forward. He also explained that www4mail programs allows retrieval of web pages, filling of web forms(get or post),on-line browsing, downloading of web pages, searching of database via e-mail etc. He described www4mail as an instructive example of a technological solution that directly addresses the disparity in access to information. He gave examples on the usefulness of the www4mail server as:- (i) Gaining in-house technical expertise (ii)Aid to research activities We were taught how to use the www4mail server to obtain useful informations for research activities and other matters of interest.Cummulative per- centage of population by age of Latin Americans was given to observe the percentage of internet users between the old and the young people. 3. ANTENNAS AND RADIO MEASUREMENT Different types of antennas and radio equipment were shown to us by C.Fonda.Thereafter,we observed the the performance characteristics of cables connected to the spectrum analyzer,we discovered that cable loss was more on longer cables than shorter ones.He latter tested the transmitting power and the receiving power of different antennas weretested to observe their performance characteristics. The exercise was really revealing and we all seemed enjoy it. This exercise continued till the the close of the day. Samuel
