LABORATORY DIARY FOR 20/2/01

The day started with a brief review of the time table for the day, which
was amended as follows:
1. 09.00-10.00 - Continuation of Exercises on Linux
2. 10.00-12.00 - Introduction to Networking
3. 14.00-15.00 - Lecture on Generic Network Model
4. 15.00-17.00 - Exercises on Networking, Routing and Subnetting
5. 17.00-18.00 - Spread Spectrum Overview

It was noted that from today, the laboratory session will be extended by
one hour. Hence we will close at 18.00 hours instead of 17.00 hours.

1. EXERCISES ON LINUX (CONTD.)
We practiced more of the Linux commands. We saw how hardware devices are
handled by the file system.
We went through commands to view file contents, to create, copy or delete
a file. We explored the different ways of working with a directory as
well as moving around directories and linking files. We also saw some
features of the Shell

2. INTRODUCTION TO NETWORKING
Here we learned the following topics:
- Why do we need a Computer Network?
- The need for standardization
- The theory of the OSI Model and its practical application in Internet
- Network Classification, Network Media and Basic Hardware

3. After the Lunch Break, we suspended laboratory activities to listen to
the Lecture on The Generic Network Model.

4 We resumed the lab activities with exercises on Networking, Routing and
Subnetting.
During this exercise, we were divided into four groups, each one given
the task of designing, planning and implementing a LAN of 5 computers
made up of 1 router and 4 hosts. Each group succeeded in setting up the
LAN, after carefully working out and assigning IP, SUBNET, GATEWAY &
BROADCAST Addresses to each computer in the network. Some of the routers
were also configured in a joint activity (because some had been
configured before the group activity started)
During these exercises on Networking, the laboratory was so lively that
we did not realize when it was 19.00.
As time was not our friend today (as is always the case), we suspended
the work for the day.
Although we could not complete all the topics assigned for the day
(Spread Spectrum Overview is still outstanding), it was a day very well
spent.
It is getting more interesting everyday.
