Wireless to Powerless
Why I am here?
Organiser of this workshop told us you should feel fortunate. I was thinking why? Immediately I got the answer, “you are only ten percent of the participants selected out of three hundred application, which ICTP received for this workshop.”
I remember when I first received the proposal to attend this workshop from my organisation in India. I refused my colleague and told her, “I am not going to apply, we have so many other things to do” . The reason I refused her was, I thought It was workshop on WiMAX. And I read recently that one of our Indian company will soon introduce WiMAX in India so no need to learn about WiMAX. And we have lot of other challenges before us other then WiMAX.
True but my colleague was thinking about low cost wireless networking and she was talking from social perspective, which I always forget, and as far as wireless networking is concerned she said, we must learn about mesh networking. If we really want wireless networking to be low cost, wireless mesh netwoking seems to be the only solution. And are there not so many other things to be learned. So i finally applied for the workshop and i am part of learning wifi here at ICTP.
Why wireless?
Wireless because wi-fi mature enough now, only thing left to learn, how we should learn it and deploy it. At he current situation the only technology which really can be reached to those who need most. The people who live in remote locations and desperately seeking information on government schemes, education, health. The other thing why mesh networking because it allow one to share with others specially with neighborer. Very meaningful for developing worlds and for all, to reduce coat. The fun part of any information communication technology (ICT) resources are, we can share them and by sharing we can reduce the cost. Some people don't share because they get discouraged from some section of society specially business community who do not wish to let grow the SHARING CULTURE, they think they might be loosing their business.
We at our organisation are still doing lot of struggles in India to make people understand to use computer, thinking computers beyond typewriter. And on the other prospective most of people still think computers means Microsoft windows. I know people outside world think India ahead in using ICTs thats true, but only in urban areas and most of them are using computers as typewriter and most of the time using propitiatory software though we have great solution of free software against propitiatory softwares. Free knowledge is possible as wikipedia.org is now most advanced encyclopedia in this world and its has also helped us to understand wiki for sharing knowledge. Those who use wikipedia and other wikis must have understood the power of sharing knowledge. Its not possible for single organisation to create such big knowledge base. Wikipedia can only become successful because people participated in creating it. Though we are thirty participants and more then ten resource people we are connected with all and sharing with world what we are doing through wiki. Our workshop uses wiki its possible for those participants and anyone in this world who wish to learn about wireless networking can view our wiki

http://www.ictp.tv/eya/school2008.php nice idea.
Why free software?
Four Freedom
The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
I recently come to know another interesting thing the difference between open source software and free software. Difference between them is long story only thing we must understand, that we have to use free software term and software, both are very important things. People afraid of the word free though Richard Stallman said many times FREE means freedom of speech. As far as end users are concerned in ICT world, why should they afraid of the free software its free as simple as that. And if you don't want it free lot of free software non-profit organisations and individual asking for donation you can pay them. If you wish to know more about free software movement go to
